Johnson, James

James H (Tim) Johnson Deputy Sheriff Tim Johnson of Visalia died on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at Kaweah Delta District Hospital at the age of 77 surrounded by his loving family. Tim was born to Ken and Liz Johnson in Oxnard, CA on July 7, 1936. Tim, is survived by his wife of 57 years, Meridel Houston Johnson and their children, Christina Johnson of Post Falls, Idaho and husband Lee Clifton, their children, Trey, Elbeth and K. C.; James "Tim" Johnson of Visalia, wife Cheryl and their children, Ashley, Jason, Derrick, Raegan; David Johnson of Ojai, CA and his wife Toni, their daughter Tayler; Robin Johnson, of Hughson, CA, her husband, Fred Dickinson, and their children Joshua and Zachary. Tim is also survived by his three brothers, Robert Johnson of Sonora, CA, Richard Johnson of Ojai, CA and Roger Johnson of Washington and 9 great-grandchildren. Tim and Del were married two weeks after he was honorably discharged from the US Naval Service where he served as a machinist mate during the Korean War . Tim began his law enforcement career as a patrolman with the South Pasadena Police Department. Tim and his wife moved their young family to Tulare County in 1963 to begin his career with the Tulare County Sheriff's Department. He moved quickly up the ranks and retired after 26 years with the rank of Lieutenant. Tim was an avid horseman and was an early member of the Goshen Mounted Police and the Atascadero Trail Riders. He was very active within his community dedicating his time to organizations such as the Woodlake Lions, Visalia Elks, Visalia Moose, Tulare County Retired Employees Association, Sons In Retirement and was founder of the Mixed Nuts RV Group and co-founder and past Grand Marshall of the Visalia St. Paddy's Day Parade. In retirement, Tim and his wife loved traveling in their RV with the Mixed Nuts. Tim loved visiting with family and friends throughout the United States and abroad. Most recently they enjoyed a trip to Ireland, England and St. Thomas Virgin Islands. He loved golfing, managing to find a golf course wherever they decided to park the "rig". Tim was a friend to everyone and was always lending a helping hand wherever he could. He lived life head-on and on his own terms. His large presence will be missed by all who knew and loved him. A viewing is scheduled for Tuesday, January 21, 2014 from 4-7 p.m. at Salser and Dillard Funeral Chapel, 127 E. Caldwell Ave., Visalia, CA, with rosary at 6 p.m. A mass celebrating Tim's life will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 608 N Church St., Visalia, CA on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at 10:00 a.m., and concluding at Visalia Cemetery, 1300 W Goshen Ave., Visalia.
