Unemployment hits 49-year low, but slow wage growth, underemployment linger
American workers continued to find more jobs and better-paying jobs in September as the labor market tightened and unemployment dropped to a nearly 50-year low, but economists say some less encouraging trends have emerged as well. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 134,000 new jobs were added to the economy last month, bringing the unemployment rate down from 3. 9 percent to 3. 7 percent.
