Suspect enters not-guilty plea in deadly assault

A man accused of beating another man to death pleaded not guilty on Friday in Kern County Superior Court. Fidel Ivan Gandara, 23, was arrested Dec. 19 on allegations of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm in the Dec. 18 attack on Brian Guzman on White Lane near Stine Road. He was arraigned in court on those charges on Dec. 21. But Guzman died of his injuries and the attempted murder charges were changed to murder in the first degree.
